James O. Harp Environmental Recognition Award Nominations Open

December 29, 2025

The City of Norman Environmental Control Advisory Board (ECAB) has opened nominations for the 2025 James O. Harp Environmental Recognition Award, an award to highlight exceptional environmental volunteerism in the Norman community. Nominations will be accepted through January 31, 2026.

"Norman has a wonderful history of community involvement and service from many dedicated and hardworking volunteers," said Michele Loudenback, Manager of the Division of Environmental Sustainability & Resiliency. "Our environment has benefited from so many tireless advocates and workers. By nominating an environmental volunteer, folks can help recognize those critical efforts that often occur behind the scenes and without fanfare."

The award was established in 2021 and James O. Harp was posthumously selected as the first recipient of the award which now bears his name. Harp was a longtime member of ECAB and served on numerous other boards and committees dedicated to improving Norman. Other winners of the award include community members such as Amanda Nairn, president of the Central Oklahoma Master Conservancy District, and Cathy Bowden, a member of the University Lutheran Church "Green Team."

"The Environmental Control Advisory Board appreciates the community members who spend their time, talent and treasure to protect and enhance our environment," Loudenback said. "This award is a way to recognize those who are often behind the scenes, making sure our resources area available for us all now and into the future."

Nomination forms and instruction can be accessed at normanok.gov. Forms should be returned via email to [email protected]. Categories of nomination include: Individual/Group; Business; or Nonprofit Organization/Agency/School.

ECAB investigates, prepares, plans for, and recommends programs regarding the preservation and enhancement of the environmental quality of the City and also administers variance procedures in the Air Quality Control Ordinance. The 9-person board meets monthly at Norman City Hall.
