Thompson Denounces Trump’s Abuse of Power in Pardoning Election Conspirators

(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement condemning President Trump's decision to pardon Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, and others who conspired to subvert the 2020 election.

"Once again, Donald Trump is using the power of the presidency to protect the very people who conspired to undermine our democracy. After pardoning the rioters who stormed the Capitol, he is now extending the same protections to the architects who sent them there. These individuals violated the sanctity of our elections, and pardoning them is a slap in the face to every American who believes their vote should count."

"No presidential pardon can erase the violence of January 6th. These conspirators still face serious accountability at the state level, and the American people will not forget who tried to overturn their votes. Congress must continue its oversight to ensure no president-past, present, or future-can shield their allies from justice."
