Mercedes F1 Team aims to quadruple aviation emissions reduction by 2025

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has announced an ambitious plan to significantly increase their reduction of aviation emissions by the end of 2025.

This commitment comes as the Formula One flyaway races are set to begin in Azerbaijan and Singapore, highlighting the sport's environmental impact through air travel.

In 2022, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team became the first global sports team to announce a multi-year, multi-million euro commitment to invest in SAF.

Building on this initiative, the team is now aiming to quadruple their aviation emissions reduction through further investment in SAF certificates.

The team expects to reduce their aviation emissions by a total of 18,500 tCO2e across 2024 and 2025, with 8,000 tCO2e saved in 2024 and 10,500 tCO2e saved in 2025.

Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, said: "A net reduction in our emissions sits at the heart of our operations and the ambitious sustainability targets we have set ourselves.

"We continue to invest in innovative solutions and technology that will enhance our performance, helping us go further faster."

The team's sustainability strategy extends beyond air travel.

During the 2023 European Season, they saved 339 tCO2e by switching to HVO biofuels for land freight and on-site operations at European race venues. For 2024, they have set a target of 100% biofueled logistics for all nine races in the European season.

This latest announcement aligns with Formula 1's broader sustainability goals, including the introduction of sustainable fuels in 2026.

The Mercedes team's efforts are supported by their title and technical partner PETRONAS, which is playing a crucial role in the development and rollout of their biofuel mission.

Commenting on why SAF is important to Mercades, Head of Sustainability Alice Ashpitel said: "Our investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel is more than a strategy; we believe it can create a greener future.

"We see SAFc as a game-changer, a way for sports and businesses to make a lasting impact."

As the sport continues to evolve, initiatives like these demonstrate how F1 teams are taking concrete steps to address their environmental impact and drive innovation in sustainable technologies.
