Fatal Vehicle Collision – Freeman Mill Road / Interstate 40

GREENSBORO, NC (August 11, 2026) - A woman faces multiple charges - including driving while impaired - after a single-car crash early Sunday resulted in the death of one of her young children.

Jamiah Smith, 26, of Locust, NC, is also charged with felony death by vehicle, two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, two counts of a child restraint violation, possessing an open container of alcohol, and failure to maintain lane control.

At approximately 4:17 a.m. Sunday, GPD officers, Greensboro Fire, and Guilford County EMS responded to the crash in the area of Freeman Mill Road and the ramp to I-40 West.

Investigators say Smith was driving a Honda Accord south on Freeman Mill Road, to I-40 West, and failed to negotiate the curve of the ramp. Smith had her three children in the vehicle with her: a 9-year-old and 1-year-old twins. When the vehicle left the road, it overturned and came to a stop on the ramp from US 220 North to I-40 West.

Smith and her children were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. One of the twins was critically injured because the child was not properly secured in a child restraint seat; The child died Monday evening. The other children were treated and released from the hospital the day of the crash.

The Greensboro Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Unit responded and is investigating.
