The head of the Spanish Executive, Pedro Sánchez, has chaired a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Centre for the Memory of the Victims of Terrorism Foundation, which took place at the Moncloa Palace.

The meeting was also attended by the First Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Treasury, María Jesús Montero; the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares; the Minister for the Presidency, Justice and Parliamentary Relations, Félix Bolaños; the Minister for Defence, Margarita Robles; the Minister for Home Affairs, Fernando Grande-Marlaska; the Minister for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz.

During his speech, Pedro Sánchez emphasised the importance of raising awareness among young people, because making them aware of the profound threat that terrorism poses to our democratic coexistence is the best antidote to the rise of hate speech and the irrationality that grips our societies.

With regard to this fundamental task of teaching so as not to forget and the need to reach an ever-growing number of people, Sánchez noted that, to date, more than 126,000 people have visited the Vitoria-Gasteiz Memorial Centre since its opening in 2021, more than 9,000 students and teachers have visited it, and training activities have been carried out with the participation of almost 1,300 educators. In this context, he considered the progress in opening the future headquarters in Madrid, which will ultimately be located in the former CSIC building at 4-8 C/ Duque de Medinaceli, to be crucial.

The President reiterated the Government of Spain's commitment to the goals embodied by the board and, specifically, to the absolute delegitimisation of terrorism and the construction of role models to follow in order to strengthen our democracy.
