Police lay stunting charges

Police have charged a driver for stunting following an incident last week in Halifax.

On March 13 at approximately 8:30 p.m., a member of the Traffic Unit was travelling on Dutch Village Road when he observed a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk ahead of him. The officer, who was in an unmarked police vehicle, heard the vehicle continuously revving its engine. When traffic began to move, the driver accelerated quickly, causing the tires to screech. The vehicle then crossed the centre line into the oncoming traffic.

After stopping at a red light, the driver once again accelerated loudly when the light turned green and began weaving through traffic. The officer then activated the emergency lights and siren and conducted a traffic stop on Main Avenue.

A 22-year-old man was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act. In Nova Scotia, the fine for stunting is $2,422.50 and six points are assigned to the driver's record. In addition, the driver received a seven-day license suspension, and the vehicle was seized.

In a continued effort to address traffic safety and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on speed enforcement. We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. If you see someone driving dangerously, report it to police by calling 911.
