Safety Following Hurricane Milton

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Oct. 12, 2024) - Safety is crucial to prevent injury following a hurricane. Follow these safety tips to prevent injury:

• Avoid standing water as it may present hazards such as harmful bacteria, pollutants, wildlife and unsafe footing that could cause falls. If you have any open wounds, avoid flood waters.
• When returning home, be sure to flush out the water in your sinks and showers. Let the water run for at least 30 minutes, or until the water runs clear to flush out any sediment or debris that may have accumulated in the pipes during any flooding. Remember to remove any aerators or showerheads for proper cleaning before flushing.
• When using sinus irrigation such as neti pots, be sure to manufacture directions.
• Watch for debris. Be cautious of fallen branches, power lines, and other debris that can cause injury. Do not visit any parks as all Charlotte County Parks are closed while damage from Hurricane Milton is assessed.
• Use caution while inspecting your home. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and gloves.
• Avoid walking on roofs. Falls are a common injury and risk.
• Do not drive on closed roads or go around barriers.
• Report downed power lines to law enforcement or to the power company.
