Washington, D.C. - During National Police Week, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) gave a speech on the Senate floor to honor Nevada law enforcement and highlight her work to support public safety. This week, Congress advanced her bills to combat organized retail crime, support Tribal public safety, and posthumously honor fallen law enforcement officers.
"For me, supporting law enforcement is personal. My husband is a retired law enforcement officer," said Senator Cortez Masto on the Senate floor. "And I have seen firsthand the sacrifices our officers and their families make so our families feel safe at home. That's why I've worked with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to champion legislation to support police officers across the country."
Progress was made on several of Senator Cortez Masto's bipartisan bills to support law enforcement this week:
The former top law enforcement official in Nevada, Senator Cortez Masto is a leading advocate in the Senate for Nevada's police officers. Last year, Cortez Masto's bill to ensure the families of retired law enforcement officers killed as a result of their service have access to benefits was signed into law and her legislation to strengthen public safety in Indian Country passed the Senate. She is leading bipartisan legislation to combat human trafficking along America's interstates, airways, railroads, and waterways. Cortez Masto has also introduced legislation to redirect excessive funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to local law enforcement and has condemned the pardons of violent criminals who assaulted police officers on January 6th.
