MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Residents, community leaders, historians, and civic advocates are invited to attend a special screening of The People's Council, a new documentary exploring Montgomery's political evolution and the transformative journey that led to the city's Mayor-Council form of government.
The community event will take place on Sunday, November 15, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Capri Theatre, 1045 E. Fairview Ave., Montgomery, Alabama 36106. Admission is free, although registration is required.
Created in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Montgomery's Mayor-Council system, The People's Council offers a compelling look at the people, policies, and pivotal moments that reshaped local government and expanded representation in Alabama's capital city. Through archival footage, personal accounts, and reflections from past and present leaders, the documentary chronicles Montgomery's ongoing pursuit of a government that reflects the voices and aspirations of its residents.
Rooted in the city's rich civil rights legacy, the film begins in the aftermath of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and follows the decades-long movement toward greater civic participation and representation. It highlights the historic 1975 transition to the Mayor-Council form of government, a milestone that changed how leadership was structured and how communities engaged with local decision-making.
More than a story about government, The People's Council is a story about people. The documentary honors the organizers, advocates, elected officials, and everyday residents who worked to build a more responsive and representative city. It also invites audiences to reflect on Montgomery's continuing journey toward progress and civic engagement.
Attendees will receive an exclusive first look at the director's cut of the documentary and have the opportunity to participate in a community conversation about the film's themes, the city's history, and the future of local leadership.
