IITA -CGIAR celebrates one of its distinguished scientists, Professor Rony Swennen, following his conferment of the noble title of Baron by His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science, tropical agriculture, and global food security.

The Belgian Royal Palace made the announcement as part of the country's National Day honors, which recognize individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Belgian society and the global community. Professor Swennen was among a select group of eminent personalities elevated to the Belgian nobility.

An internationally acclaimed scientist and one of the world's foremost experts in banana and plantain research, Professor Swennen has dedicated decades to improving the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers through groundbreaking research and innovation. His work has significantly advanced the understanding, conservation, breeding, and sustainable production of banana and plantain crops, particularly across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Professor Swennen serves as the lead scientist with the IITA Plantain and Banana breeding program and is affiliated with the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering of the KU Leuven. Throughout his illustrious career, he has pioneered research efforts aimed at developing improved banana varieties that are more resilient to pests, diseases, and climate-related challenges, thereby strengthening food systems and enhancing farmer incomes globally.

This recognition, a fitting tribute to a scientist whose work has transcended borders and transformed lives, reflects not only Professor Swennen's scientific excellence but also his unwavering commitment to improving food and nutrition security for vulnerable communities around the world.

Over the years, Professor Swennen has played a pivotal role in mentoring young scientists and fostering international collaborations that have accelerated agricultural innovation in developing countries. His contributions have positioned banana and plantain research at the forefront of global discussions on food security and climate resilience.

The conferment of the title of Baron adds another remarkable milestone to Professor Swennen's distinguished career and serves as an inspiration to researchers dedicated to using science to address some of humanity's most pressing challenges.
