Recruits Begin Training at Omaha Fire Academy

A class of fire recruits has started training at the Omaha Fire Department Training Academy.

The 37-member class will train for 12 weeks, then continue field training after graduation in 2025.

Fire Chief Kathy Bossman told the recruits she has high expectations.

"The Omaha Fire Department strives for excellence," said Chief Bossman. "As you start your career as a firefighter, I encourage you to embrace challenges and commit to a culture of teamwork. Our success as a department is built on the collective efforts of individuals who set high expectations for the entire team.

Mayor Jean Stothert welcomed the class, with a message of support.

"You are joining a professional fire department, dedicated to keeping our city and our citizens safe," aid Mayor Stothert. "You will learn from Omaha's best, and have the resources you need to be successful."

Two weeks ago, Omaha voters overwhelmingly approved bond issues, including $10 million so we can continue to buy equipment for our fire and police departments, and $146 million to build new city facilities for police and fire as our city grows and calls for service increase.

"We constantly evaluate emergency response needs and we are committed to the best facilities, equipment, training, and personnel. In any emergency, you will need the best tools possible. Safe, modern equipment will help you do your jobs safely and effectively," said Mayor Stothert.

This is the second fire recruit class in recent months. A lateral recruit class, firefighters with previous fire service experience, completed has competed academy training.

"At the Omaha Fire Department, we highly value diverse perspectives, recognizing that each unique viewpoint contributes to our collective success. I have full confidence that each of you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Omaha Fire Department," said Chief Bossman.
