Gov. Rhoden Declares State of Emergency
PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Larry Rhoden has declared a state of emergency for the counties impacted by the June 29, 2026, severe storms that caused significant damage across portions of central South Dakota.
"South Dakotans are tough, and they step up to support one another in difficult times like these," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "By declaring a disaster, we can better support local response efforts and help our state rebuild. Please join me in praying for all those affected by the storm."
Yesterday, Governor Rhoden visited the City of Highmore to see firsthand the extensive damage caused by the storm and to meet with local officials and emergency responders. The declaration will help reduce administrative barriers associated with debris removal and allow the state to utilize resources to assist with response and recovery efforts. Six state agencies are currently assisting with recovery efforts, including 23 inmates who are trained to assist with storm clean-up.
Local communities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and calculate recovery costs. At this time, it is too early to determine whether the disaster will meet the thresholds necessary to request a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration through FEMA.
As authorized under South Dakota law, Governor Rhoden issued a verbal emergency declaration to immediately activate the authorities available under a state of emergency, allowing response and recovery efforts to proceed without delay. A formal written declaration will follow.
