More sustainable business travel

After speaking to a number of travel managers about their sustainability challenges, we found as many approaches as there are companies. One common thread is that you're likely to be involved in helping reduce carbon emissions to support your company's sustainability goals. But where to begin?

Amex GBT Egencia is a good place to start

Amex GBT Egencia (Egencia) has a range of features that allow you to track your travel emissions, guide travelers to more sustainable options and help you compensate for them.

We recently introduced the IATA carbon calculation methodology which is tailored to flight travel plus two new policies that steer your travelers to rail or more carbon efficient flights where possible. This is in addition to our long-standing reporting and compensation features that help analyze and potentially compensate for carbon emissions you couldn't avoid.

What options would suit our needs?

With so many options, it's hard to know what would have the most impact. This is where our new 'sustainability recommendations' come in. This feature considers your company's travel behaviour data and shows the potential savings, enabling you to make better-informed decisions.

Sustainability recommendations visualize travel carbon emissions over the last few months and outline the following actions, with the specific impact on emissions and costs on your company:

  1. Air vs rail
A combination of our air vs rail feature and a travel policy that showcases relevant rail options. The company determines when it's reasonable to take the rail alternative e.g. "less than four hours."
  1. Carbon efficient flights
A flight policy that shows flights 'more efficient than average'. The comparison is easily made by travelers on the flight search results page sorting them by 'least emissions'.
  1. Cabin class preferences
Business class travel causes more emissions, so a company could consider steering travelers to Economy in certain situations e.g. "flights less than five hours."
  1. SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel)
Travel managers can see SAF lifecycle reductions in their travel program and learn more/access insights from Avelia, one of the world's first and now most established SAF platforms.

From these recommendations, the travel manager can delve deeper into the data with our carbon emissions dashboard in Egencia's Analytics Studio or go directly to the travel policy page to make any necessary updates.

These recommendations showcase some of the most impactful options on your travel program from a policy and partnership perspective. Other elements of Egencia™ offer companies with additional ways to save carbon emissions, such as average carbon emissions information for flights, cars tagged as electric vehicles and hotel properties that have environmental certifications from recognized 3rd party institutions. Travelers can use this additional information to further help save on carbon emissions.
