Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach invites residents to participate in upcoming Fixit Clinics, hosted by the Department of Energy and Environmental Services in partnership with Algalita Marine Research and Education, Pedal Movement, Long Beach Time Exchange and the LB Reuses coalition. These no-cost clinics will offer residents a chance to repair broken household items and learn valuable skills with the help of Fixit coaches.
Fixit Clinics are a nationwide effort to reduce household waste by encouraging residents to repair and reuse items rather than dispose of them. Fixing household items is an effective way to divert waste from landfills, conserve natural resources and lower greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Many items, especially electronics, require special handling and repair is often a safer and more sustainable choice than disposal.
The City will host its first Fixit Clinic of 2026 on Saturday, April 25 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.). During the event, residents will work alongside volunteer Fixit coaches who share their time, tool expertise and knowledge to help assess, troubleshoot and attempt repairs on everyday items. The clinics emphasize hands-on learning and community connection. Even if repairs are not successful, residents will gain valuable insight into how their items function and how to troubleshoot future issues. To increase access to the program, additional clinics will be held in other areas of Long Beach, with dates to be announced in the coming weeks.
Residents may bring one item to repair. Additional items may be added to a waitlist if the event has not reached capacity. No items will be added to the waitlist after 2 p.m. Commonly repaired items include electronics, bicycles, small appliances, clothing, toys and jewelry. Items not accepted include smart TVs, cellphones, tablets, printers, electronic screens, computer software, Mac or Apple products and large appliances.
The Fixit Clinic is open to all ages, but minors must be accompanied by an adult. The event is offered at no cost to attend, but it is not a drop-off repair service. Residents get to take part in the repair process by assisting Fixit coaches. Attendees should bring any needed parts.
The Long Beach Fixit Clinics support the City's waste and emission reduction goals outlined in the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. They also underscore a commitment to community education and sustainable practices. To date, these clinics have kept 3,170 pounds of household items out of local landfills. In 2025, the Fixit Clinics brought in 301 residents who helped repair 223 items.
To volunteer as a Fixit coach, preregister for a clinic or learn more and share suggestions about upcoming Fixit Clinics, visit lbcity.info/fixitclinics. Preregistration helps volunteers prepare and increases the likelihood your item can be repaired. Clinics are popular and may fill up, so early registration is encouraged, but not required.
