HONOLULU, May 23, 2026 - Hawaiian Electric continues to monitor weather conditions as persistent winds and rapidly-shifting humidity levels increase the potential need for a Public Safety Power Shutoff in areas with high exposure to wildfire risk.
As of 5 p.m., areas of particular concern include Kawaihae and Waikoloa areas on Hawaii Island, as well as West Maui and parts of Omaopio and Pulehu Roads on Maui. Customers in these areas are urged to initiate their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of outages lasting several hours to days.
Power outages that are NOT related to the company's PSPS program may occur due to severe weather conditions. For example, around 4,500 customers lost electricity in West Maui shortly before 3 p.m. when a metal roof from a storage shed was blown into power lines. Crews are working to remove the object and restore power in the area.
On Hawaii Island, electricity was restored earlier today to the remaining customers in South Kona who lost power after an earthquake struck the area last night. Power was also restored to customers in Keauhou after crews completed repairs to a pole and lines damaged by an early morning motor vehicle accident.
The company reminds the public that downed power lines should be considered as energized and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet or more away from all power lines. Warn others to stay away. For emergency assistance call 911. For Hawaiian Electric, call our Trouble Line:
