The City of Torrance is aware of the concerning reports regarding the detainment of Martir Garcia Lara, a fourth-grader at Torrance Elementary School, and his father by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While immigration enforcement matters fall under federal jurisdiction and are not within the City's authority, City staff have reached out to the offices of Congressmember Ted Lieu and Congresswoman Maxine Waters to ensure that the family is receiving the necessary support. Both congressional offices are actively working with the family to better understand the situation and to advocate for their well-being.
"As a community, we are deeply concerned when any child in our city faces uncertainty and fear," said Mayor George Chen. "Every child deserves to feel safe and supported, and we are committed to working within our authority to ensure our community remains a place where all families can thrive knowing that immigration enforcement is a federal matter."
The City of Torrance stands with our residents in seeking clarity and fairness. We will continue to monitor the situation and support efforts to ensure the rights of all members of our community-especially our children-are respected and protected.
The City encourages any residents with concerns about this matter to contact their federal
representatives.
