APCO Seeks Comments on Candidate National Technical Standard Public Safety Communications Common Incident Types for Data Exchange

Alexandria, VA - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International is seeking comments on candidate American National Standard (ANS) Public Safety Communications Common Incident Types for Data Exchange.

Incident type codes are used by emergency communications centers (ECCs) and public safety entities to classify the incidents they handle. These codes commonly use a combination of alphanumeric characters that are meaningful only to a specific agency or region. This standard provides a list of incident type common codes for use by ECCs and public safety entities when sharing incident information with disparate agencies and authorized stakeholders.

"Public safety depends on shared understanding - and that begins with a common language for the types of incidents that come through the ECC," said Mike O'Connor, president of APCO International. "We encourage public safety professionals at every level to review this standard and share their expertise during the public comment period. The strength of our standards process comes from the breadth of voices that shape it."

The public may review and comment on this candidate standard until October 5 via the APCO website.
