The City of Tyler is beginning a comprehensive Historic Resources Survey on Monday, March 23, focused around the Texas College area, advancing the community's ongoing commitment to preserving architectural and cultural heritage.
The project will document structures constructed before 1977 through a reconnaissance-level survey, along with a broader "windshield survey" of nine postwar subdivisions. This effort is being conducted in coordination with the Texas Historical Commission through the Certified Local Government (CLG) program.
The survey will be carried out by qualified historic preservation professionals and will include field documentation, photography, and evaluation of properties for potential historic significance. All work will be conducted from public rights-of-way, and no entry onto private property will occur.
Fieldwork is expected to take place during multiple week-long visits throughout 2026. Residents in the survey area may see survey teams photographing buildings and documenting neighborhood characteristics.
The results of the survey will:
Identify historically significant properties and neighborhoods.
Provide a foundation for future preservation planning efforts.
Inform potential local landmark designations or historic districts.
Support planning and policy decisions related to growth and development.
A draft report is anticipated in mid-2027, followed by a public review period. The final report is expected by September 2027.
