UA Photography Professor Awarded Prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Allison Grant, an associate professor of art at The University of Alabama was awarded a 2026 Guggenheim Fellowship, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation announced.

Grant is one of 223 distinguished thinkers, innovators and creators in this year's class of fellows, chosen through a rigorous application and peer review process from nearly 5,000 applicants. Fellows are chosen on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, and each receives a monetary stipend to pursue independent work under "the freest possible conditions."

"Receiving a Guggenheim fellowship is a tremendous honor," Grant said. "This award isn't mine alone. It belongs to the communities I create with, and I am so grateful to carry forward what we made together."

Grant will use her fellowship to support her collaborative photography project "Holding Together," a photography series featuring individuals holding botanicals historically tied to reproductive care. The project was built collaboratively with people advocating for expanded access to reproductive healthcare in the Deep South.

Grant is the first faculty member from the UA department of art and art history to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship.

"The Guggenheim Fellowship is one of the most respected recognitions an artist can receive. It speaks to the strength, seriousness, and national significance of Allison's work," said Jason Guynes, department chair. "As a department, we are immensely proud of her."

Grant is an artist, writer, curator, and associate professor of photography in the department of art and art history. Her artworks have been widely exhibited and are held in collections nationwide. Recently, Grant's debut photobook, "Within the Bittersweet," was acquired by several collections. Grant also serves as the department's director of graduate studies for studio art.
