This morning, the 64th Administration of the City of Frederick was inaugurated at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Following the ceremony, the City Council convened at City Hall for its first public meeting where, after public comment, members elected César Díaz as President and Katie Nash as Vice President of the City Council. Their leadership roles take effect immediately.
President César Díaz, the City's first immigrant to serve on the City Council, was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He moved to Frederick as a young adult and currently lives with his partner, Nicole, where they raise 15-year-old Andrew, a student at Frederick High School. They are members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick and volunteers at Centro Hispano, where President Díaz teaches beginner-level computer classes to Spanish-speaking residents. He also regularly attends meetings with the RISE advocacy group.
"It's an honor to be picked by the members of the Council. I will promise to work as hard as I did on my campaign to ensure the success of the City and City Council," said César Díaz.
Vice President Katie Nash, a longtime community advocate and second-term Council Member, will support the President in overseeing Council operations and assume leadership duties when necessary.
"It is an honor to support President Díaz in my new role of Vice President," said Katie Nash. "I remain committed to supporting the establishment of an independent legislative body and the Council Members' continued success."
