What Did PayPal’s Quarter Change For Its Stock

PayPal (PYPL) stock rose 2.0% when the company reported its fiscal Q3 2026 results on October 27, 2026. The S&P 500 gained 0.6% during the session, and Visa and Mastercard both slipped. Investors bought the shares even though PayPal posted revenue of $8.58 billion, landing about 1.5% below the $8.71 billion analyst consensus. So what did PayPal's quarter give buyers that its sales did not?

PayPal Now Expects More Earnings Per Share In 2026

PayPal delivered a higher profit forecast. Management raised its full-year 2026 forecast for adjusted earnings per share to about $5.60, up from the $5.38 projected in its July release. The company also beat expectations for the quarter itself, posting earnings per share of $1.45 compared to the $1.31 analysts expected.

Speaking on the October 27 call, management said transaction margin dollars exceeded expectations, and operating expenses fell below its forecast. Management says it runs the business based on transaction margin dollars, which represent the money PayPal keeps from payments after covering costs. The quarter raised what PayPal expects to earn in 2026, while its outlook for branded checkout payment volume stayed where it was. By November 2, the shares were up 6.9% from the close before the report, while the S&P 500 lost 1.7% over the same days.

Is PayPal's Sales Slowdown More Than One Quarter?

The slowdown in sales goes back further than fiscal Q3 2026. PayPal's revenue grew 8.0% in the twelve months to September 2024, before the growth rate fell to 4.5% over the following twelve months. Growth held close to that pace at 4.4% in the twelve months to September 2026. For fiscal Q3 2026 alone, revenue grew 2.0% from a year earlier.

Management described the same slow pattern in PayPal's checkout business, where payment volume through its branded checkout has grown in a 1% to 2% range for four quarters. Other products are expanding much faster. Management said Pay Later grew 25% and Pay with Venmo grew 43% in the quarter. Management credited the quarter's 8% rise in adjusted earnings per share to stronger transaction margin and lower operating expenses. Separately, PayPal has cut headcount by more than 2,000.

What PayPal Said About 2027

Management plans to spend more in 2027, both in ways that reduce transaction margin dollars and through higher operating expenses. The company intends to scale what is working across more merchants in the U.S. and abroad, while still growing adjusted earnings per share at about the pace it expects for 2026. Over time, management expects these changes to lift transaction margin dollar growth into the mid-single digits, without branded checkout returning fully to its historical growth rates. Asked on the call about past offers for the company, the CEO said the board will weigh any option objectively, and that for now the best option is to execute its plan.

Management did not put a year on the mid-single-digit goal, but it said the 2027 spending is meant to drive stronger growth in 2028 and beyond. It has given no formal 2027 guidance yet, stating that it will arrive on its next call in February. Growth in transaction margin dollars, which management expects to be slightly positive in the fourth quarter, is the figure to watch when PayPal reports in February 2027, along with its formal guidance for 2027.
