By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
WHEREAS, approximately 5.6 million Americans are living with limb loss and limb difference and there are an estimated 500,000 new cases of limb loss and limb difference occur each year; and
WHEREAS, approximately 35,000 children in the United States are born annually with a congenital limb difference, and an additional 600 children lose a limb to lawn mower accidents each summer; and
WHEREAS, diabetes, vascular disease, and infection are among the most common medical conditions that precede an amputation; and
WHEREAS, studies show that preventive behaviors-such as effective diabetes management, proper wound care, and adherence to safety practices-can significantly reduce the risk of amputation; and
WHEREAS, access to appropriate prosthetic care is essential for individuals living with limb loss and limb difference, enabling them to achieve their full potential and maintain healthy, independent lives, including the ability to perform activities of daily living, essential job-related functions, personal hygiene, and physical activity that support whole-body and mental well-being; and
WHEREAS, the Amputee Coalition provides vital education, support, and advocacy through the National Limb Loss Resource Center for individuals with limb loss and limb difference, as well as for their families and healthcare providers across the United States; and
WHEREAS, April is an appropriate month to designate as Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, as the spring season symbolizes renewal, resilience, and inspiration;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize April 2026, as LIMB LOSS AND LIMB DIFFERENCE AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
