As part of County Government Month, Macon-Bibb County is proud to highlight Keith Butler, Director of Fleet Services, and his dedicated team.

Fleet Services was once called "Vehicle Maintenance," but that name didn't reflect the scope of the work they do. Keith and his team take care of every type of county vehicle: from fire trucks and dump trucks to police cars, tractors, and the trucks we use to clean up blight. As Keith puts it, "If it moves, we maintain it. We see to it that it's repaired and used."

Their work goes far beyond basic repairs. They handle safety testing for fire trucks and ladders, extend the life of expensive equipment, and find ways to save taxpayer money every day. Instead of sending vehicles out of town for service, they've brought more work in-house. That includes painting vehicles, running computer diagnostics, and even reprogramming computers from older vehicles to install in newer ones that are still running strong.

Keith shared how the team now uses special software to clean out diesel engine systems on-site. In the past, trucks had to be sent all the way to McDonough for this, costing both time and money. Now, it's faster, cheaper, and more efficient.

Fleet Services is about more than just maintenance: it's about strategy, resourcefulness, and care for the community's investment. The team is always finding smart ways to reduce costs and keep the fleet running longer.

They're also experts in reusing parts. If one vehicle can't be fixed, they salvage usable pieces to help keep others on the road. That kind of resourcefulness leads to major savings.

"My goal is to get the most out of every vehicle. We dig deep to find good parts and keep our fleet rolling," said Keith. "We're always looking for the best and least expensive way to do the job right."

What makes this team special, Keith says, is their mindset. They take pride in the work because they know it matters. "We feel a duty to the county to make sure our vehicles stay in good shape."

Thanks to Keith Butler and the Fleet Services team, Macon-Bibb is more efficient, more prepared, and better equipped to serve the community every day. We're proud to shine a light on this behind-the-scenes operation that keeps our county moving forward.
