PHOTOS: Capito Tours Progress on CDS Project in Wellsburg

WELLSBURG, W.Va. - Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a leader on the Appropriations Committee, traveled to Wellsburg, W.Va. where she received updates and toured the Wellsburg Town Square and adjacent buildings, which were renovated through a Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) allocation that she secured in Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24).

In July of 2024, Senator Capito visited Wellsburg while the project was in early stages, meeting with local officials and community leaders to encourage continued growth in the area. Her return highlights the significant progress made since then-revitalization of historic buildings for mixed-use retail, commercial, and tourism business.

"The City of Wellsburg is in the middle of an exciting downtown renovation-one that I have been proud to support through the Appropriations process," Senator Capito said. "I appreciated the opportunity to see firsthand how federal resources are helping drive renovation progress. Through the CDS process, I've worked to support local priorities that incentivize small businesses to launch and grow. Wellsburg's downtown renovation is doing just that, and I am proud to partner with local leaders to keep the momentum up."

"Thanks to Sen. Capito's support, 701 Charles Street is already making an impact, with a new small business on the first-floor drawing visitors downtown and supporting our local economy," Alex Weld, Chairwoman of the Wellsburg Urban Renewal Authority, said. "With apartments on the way, this project will also help address housing needs. We're grateful for her continued investment in projects like these, that truly move the needle in small communities like Wellsburg."
