Washington, D.C. - Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet released the following statement on congressional Republicans' effort to overturn the Bureau of Land Management's Resource Management Plan for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument:
"For time immemorial, Indigenous people living on the Colorado Plateau have called the vast canyons and desert landscapes within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument home. After years of meetings and discussions with the Tribes, local governments, and community members, the Bureau of Land Management finalized a plan for the Monument that ensured the protection of Tribal cultural resources on their ancestral homelands. Despite this collaboration, congressional Republicans are working to overturn this plan, threatening the culture and traditions of Colorado's Tribal Nations, including the Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Indian Tribes.
"This is a shameful addition to our nation's history of broken promises to our Tribes - and yet another sad attempt at taking land management decisions away from the American people. I will fight this effort every step of the way."
