WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, received a commitment from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the United States remains committed to providing extended nuclear deterrence on the Korean Peninsula.
During a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Bera asked Secretary Rubio whether any changes had been made to the United States' longstanding security posture toward South Korea following recent discussions with Korean leaders. Secretary Rubio confirmed that U.S. policy remains unchanged and emphasized the strength of military-to-military cooperation between the United States and the Republic of Korea.
"The U.S.-Republic of Korea alliance remains one of the cornerstones of stability in the Indo-Pacific," said Representative Bera. "As the region faces growing security challenges, it is critical that our allies have confidence in America's commitments. I appreciate Secretary Rubio's clear affirmation that the United States remains committed to extended deterrence and maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula."
Congressman Bera recently traveled to South Korea as part of a congressional delegation, where he met with senior government officials and discussed regional security, economic cooperation, and the future of the U.S.-Korea alliance.
