BCLA Summer Internship Spotlight: Rikisha Chahal ‘27

This summer, Rikisha Chahal '27 is gaining firsthand experience in the Office of the City Administrative Officer (CAO) for the City of Los Angeles. As the primary financial advisor to the Mayor and City Council, the CAO plays a vital role in maintaining the City's fiscal health and operational efficiency.

Rikisha is working with UCMR models, which support alternative responses to certain 911 calls. "When you call 911, it's possible for the call to be forwarded to trained civilian responders who handle situations that require minor de-escalation," she explained. Her work includes writing reports that summarize responders' experiences and helping develop a training framework for new responders.

Rikisha is a seasoned intern. She has previously interned at both a law firm and the Los Angeles Superior Court, experiences that have taught her the importance of being prepared and building relationships in the workplace.

"Be sure to pack a lunch and eat breakfast," she advised. "Use your social skills and don't be afraid to talk to your supervisor." For students starting their first internship, her advice is simple: "It's okay if you're nervous-just don't let that feeling dictate the outcome of your internship."

For Rikisha, a political science major with a minor in applied developmental psychology, this summer has also helped her clarify her career interests and the type of work she hopes to pursue after graduation. As she gains more experience, she is considering options beyond her original plan of law school.

Rikisha is one of 70 liberal arts students participating in BCLA's inaugural Summer Internship Program. Through StudyLA, a research and education center housed in BCLA, she is part of a cohort serving as civic fellows with organizations and public offices across Los Angeles. Fellows spend Monday through Thursday immersed in their internships before coming together on Fridays for professional development and excursions that deepen their understanding of the city and its communities.
