On Friday, May 22, 2026 at 8:50 p.m., Portland Police Officers assigned to East Precinct were dispatched to a report of a shooting inside a home in the 8800 block of Southeast Ankeny Street. The Air Support Unit, which was already in the air on a patrol support flight, was first to be on scene within moments of the call. The TFO (Tactical Flight Officer) was able to see a disturbance actively underway outside the house, including a man jumping into the bed of a moving pickup truck and trying to break the window into the cab. The TFO reported that the man, later identified as the suspect, jumped out of the pickup bed at East Burnside Street and Northeast 87th Avenue. Officers quickly converged and detained the man.
The driver of the pickup truck continued. At the time it was unknown how the driver was involved in the incident, so ASU Officers from North Precinct also responded to help, as the driver of the pickup continued on into that area. Ultimately the driver was stopped near Northeast 97th Avenue and Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Officers determined that she was the victim of the crimes. No one was physically injured.
The Portland Police Special Victims Unit (SVU) responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. It was determined the suspect fired a gun multiple times inside the home during a domestic disturbance. Ramon Martinez-Diaz, 48, of Portland, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Attempted Assault in the Second Degree-Domestic Violence, DV Unlawful Use of a Weapon, DV Menacing, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
This was an incredibly dynamic and rapidly evolving call, and its successful conclusion was a result of seamless collaboration between East and North Precinct officers. And critically, the incident could not have had the level of success it did without the aid of the Air Support Unit and the investigative expertise of the SVU.
