My child needs to learn how to swallow pills - Children's National

Many children are used to taking medicine in liquid form. While liquid medicine can work well for younger kids, it isn't always the easiest option. Some medicines have a strong or bitter taste, and even flavored medicine can be hard for children who are sensitive to certain tastes or textures.

Why learning to swallow pills matters

As children get older, they may need medicine that only comes as a tablet or capsule. Learning how to swallow pills can make taking medicine easier and less stressful. It's also an important step toward independence. Just like learning to brush their teeth, tie their shoes or eventually manage their own health care, learning how to take medicine is part of growing up.

When is my child ready to swallow pills?

Many parents wonder what age their child should learn to swallow pills. Some children are ready in elementary school, while others may need more time. Every child develops at their own pace. Before practicing pill swallowing, your child should be able to follow directions and safely chew and swallow food.

How to teach your child to swallow pills

When teaching a child to swallow pills, start small and keep it positive. The goal is not to rush your child or turn it into a competition. Instead, think of it like learning any other new skill that takes patience and practice.

One approach is to practice with very small, age-appropriate items, such as a candy sprinkle or another small candy about the size of a Tic Tac. Encourage your child to take a sip of water, place the small item on their tongue and then swallow. As their confidence grows, they can slowly practice with slightly larger sizes.

It's normal for children to feel nervous at first. Praise their effort, even if they aren't successful right away. Staying calm and encouraging can help build your child's confidence and ease anxiety.

As pediatricians, we spend a lot of time helping children become healthier and more independent. Learning to swallow a pill may seem like a small step, but it can make a big difference. With patience, encouragement and practice, most children can learn this skill and feel more confident when they need to take medicine in the future.
