Building the world’s first ship tunnel

The project comprises a fully equipped tunnel for maritime traffic with all necessary installations. The tunnel will be 1,700 metres long, and the cross section will be approximately 20 times larger than that of a road tunnel. The ship tunnel will enable vessels up to the size of Kystruten and Hurtigruten to pass Stadlandet in Vestland county safely. AF Gruppen, together with its consultant Norconsult, has developed the project in collaboration with the Norwegian Coastal Administration during the tender phase.

Construction works will commence in early 2027, with an estimated construction period of approximately five years.

"It is rare for us, as a design and build contractor, to have the opportunity to take on such a unique infrastructure project, attracting significant local, national and international interest. We appreciate the trust placed in us by the Norwegian Coastal Administration and look forward to a strong collaboration in delivering this project," says Amund Tøftum, CEO of AF Gruppen.
