WSU pharmacy alumnus honored for transforming diabetes care worldwide

When Joshua Neumiller first began studying pharmacy at Washington State University, he couldn't have known that his future work would touch the lives of millions around the world living with diabetes. Today, nearly two decades after earning his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from WSU in 2005, Neumiller's influence spans from classrooms in Spokane to clinical practices across the globe. In recognition of his achievements, the WSU Alumni Association has named him a recipient of the WSU Alumni Achievement Award, the association's highest honor.

The award celebrates alumni who have brought distinction to WSU through significant contributions to their professions, communities, and the world. For Neumiller, that impact can be seen every time a health care provider consults the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care-the gold-standard clinical guidelines followed internationally to treat and manage diabetes. As past chair of the ADA committee responsible for updating these standards, Neumiller helped shape the recommendations that guide care for an estimated 643 million adults and nearly 2 million young people living with diabetes worldwide.

"Dr. Neumiller has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for high-risk patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease, especially during critical transitions in care," said Blair Rossow, vice president of pharmacy operations at CHAS Health. "His work in the home care setting has transformed lives and set new standards for compassionate, patient-centered care."

After earning both his bachelor's and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from WSU, Neumiller completed advanced training in geriatrics and diabetology. He joined the WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2008 as faculty, where he quickly became known as a gifted educator, researcher, and mentor. His passion for diabetes care began early in his career while working with older adults through Elder Services of Spokane, where he provided in-home education to help patients manage their disease and maintain independence.

That commitment to improving patient lives has guided him ever since. Over his career, Neumiller has authored or co-authored more than 130 research publications and reviews, and has delivered over 100 invited lectures across regional, national, and international conferences. His students frequently describe him as both deeply knowledgeable and deeply caring - someone who expects excellence but always pairs it with compassion.

Neumiller's story also highlights WSU's long tradition of innovation in diabetes care, a legacy that began decades ago with pioneers like R. Keith Campbell, who himself received the Alumni Achievement Award in 1999 for advancing diabetes education worldwide. Like Campbell, Neumiller embodies WSU's commitment to improving health outcomes through collaboration, research, and education.

"Josh has carried forward the spirit of innovation that has long defined our college," said a former faculty member. "He's helped position WSU as a national leader in preparing pharmacists to make a real difference in the lives of people with chronic conditions like diabetes."

For Neumiller, the WSU Alumni Achievement Award is more than a recognition of past accomplishments - it's a testament to how one person, guided by education and purpose, can help change the standard of care for millions.

The college will be honoring Josh Neumiller with the WSUAA's Alumni Achievement Award on Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Ruby River Hotel Conference Room from 6-8 p.m. For those that would like to attend, registration is available online.
