O’Connell Announces Traffic Safety Improvements with New 4-Way Stops

Taunton, MA - Mayor Shaunna O'Connell and the City of Taunton announced today that beginning Monday, September 29, 2025, two intersections will be converted to 4-Way (All-Way) Stops as part of ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The intersections affected are:

Washington Street & Jackson Street

Washington Street & Whittenton Street

"We are committed to making our streets safer for everyone," said Mayor O'Connell. "These new 4-Way Stops will help calm traffic, reduce accidents, and create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. We appreciate the community's patience as drivers adjust to these changes."

In advance of the change, the City has provided residents with messaging through the City website, social media, and electronic signs to ensure broad community awareness. The Department of Public Works is overseeing the installation of new signage and road markings at both intersections.

To further support the transition, the Taunton Police Department Traffic Unit will be present at these locations during the week of the conversions to help manage traffic and ensure public safety.

Motorists are advised to use extra caution while traveling through these intersections during the adjustment period.

How to Navigate a 4-Way Stop:

  • The first vehicle to arrive at the intersection has the right of way.

  • If two or more vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the right has the right of way.

  • Vehicles going straight generally proceed before those turning left.

  • Each driver must come to a complete stop and proceed only when it is safe to do so.

  • Yield to pedestrians and cyclists: people crossing the street always have the right of way.
