LOS ALAMOS, N.M. - UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) would receive $3 million to transform Building 1 into a centralized Student Services and Success Center if New Mexico's General Obligation Bond 3 is approved by voters in the Nov. 3 general election.
"This funding would help ensure that one of our most important student hubs is brought up to the standard our students deserve," said UNM-LA Chancellor Mike Holtzclaw. "In addition to strengthening the building through roof and stucco upgrades, we plan to improve energy efficiency with new windows and doors. These improvements would reduce operating costs and create a more comfortable environment for students and employees."
The renovation will bring enrollment services, student affairs, academic support, career resources and basic needs assistance together in one convenient location. The center will include a food pantry, clothing closet and flexible spaces that encourage collaboration and student engagement.
The project also includes removing hazardous materials such as asbestos, reconfiguring interior spaces to improve functionality and upgrading key features like bathrooms and workspaces.
General obligation bonds are often the primary source of funding available for higher education institutions to renovate facilities, maintain safe learning environments, upgrade technology and support educational opportunities that strengthen New Mexico's workforce and economy.
Bond 3 would provide $351 million for public colleges, universities, and specialty schools throughout New Mexico, all with no tax rate increase.
