The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the entire region, which includes a blizzard warning for the state of Delaware. Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer has issued a state of emergency as of 12 p.m. today.
With the likelihood of significant accumulating snowfall beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing into Monday, the University of Delaware has made the following alterations to its operations and academic instruction:
Transportation services are suspended as of 3:30 p.m. Sunday and until further notice, depending on weather and road conditions. Monitor the Transportation website or Shuttle app for updates.
The University's Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Main Street in Newark will close at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The following will close early:
Residential dining halls remain open to students and will operate under regularly scheduled hours, closing at 8:30 p.m.
Campus parking enforcement will be suspended. Resident students are encouraged to park their personal vehicles within the garages at the Trabant Center and the Center for the Arts in permissible areas (e.g., avoiding handicap spots, fire lanes), space permitting and if needed. Please be mindful that this does not include City of Newark parking zones. Comply with all fire-lane and accessible-parking regulations both on and off campus. The roof levels of campus parking garages will close beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday. Vehicles remaining on the roof level beyond that time may be subject to enforcement.
The University has suspended operations for its Newark campus, effective at 12:01 a.m. Monday. Only essential personnel should report to work on Monday, as scheduled. Essential personnel are encouraged to park their personal vehicles in University garages to make snow removal from streets and parking lots easier for Facilities staff. (Parking enforcement will be suspended during this time)
Non-essential staff are released from their work responsibilities and are not expected to work on-site or remotely on Monday.
No in-person instruction will be held Monday. Instructors are asked to communicate with their students, and have discretion in how they want to proceed: they may cancel, reschedule, or convene virtually (either through synchronous or asynchronous formats). This flexibility is appreciated as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and instructors while also considering academic continuity.
Russell Dining Hall will be closed and the Caesar Rodney and Pencader dining halls will operate on a brunch-dinner schedule. For additional information, including hours of operation at retail locations, visit the Dining Services website or the Instagram account for UD Dining Services.
The following will be closed Monday: Morris Library, the Carpenter Sports Building; UD's Rust and Gold ice arenas; the Student Centers; the Wellbeing Center at Warner Hall; Clayton Hall; and the UD Barnes & Noble Bookstore.
The University will continue monitoring the winter storm and provide additional information and guidance, as necessary. Updates regarding Tuesday operations and academic instruction will be shared as conditions evolve and posted on UDaily.
All Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) courses are canceled for Monday. Read more about OLLI's operations and course instruction.
No in-person Associate in Arts Programs (AAP) classes in Wilmington will convene Monday. Leadership at Dover and Georgetown campuses will communicate guidance regarding AAP classes at their sites.
Operational changes at the Carvel Center campus in Georgetown will be communicated by campus leadership.
The Paradee Center in Dover will suspend operations Monday.
UD's Hugh R. Sharp campus in Lewes will suspend operations for Monday, with only essential personnel reporting to work, as scheduled. Lewes will hold no in-person instruction Monday. Instructors are asked to communicate with their students, as these sessions may convene virtually (either through synchronous or asynchronous formats), or be canceled or rescheduled at an instructor's discretion.
Additional details will be announced through UDaily at a later time and as necessary.
Regarding Student Wellbeing, patients with appointments at Student Health Services, Sports Medicine and the Center for Counseling and Student Development will be contacted to reschedule. Read more information on how to access after-hours and 24/7 medical- and crisis-care support.
Originally scheduled for Monday, the CGPS Study Abroad Fair has been postponed. A tentative reschedule date is Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 12-2 p.m. at the Trabant Center Multipurpose Rooms. Information will be posted to the CGPS events calendar.
The Francis Alison Award Lecture, which had been scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at the Roselle Center for the Arts, has been postponed. Rescheduling details will be announced at a later date.
Information about any additional closings or schedule changes will be posted on UDaily.
Safety is UD's highest priority. Faculty, staff and students should not put themselves at risk, and employees who expect difficulty traveling should contact their supervisors. Exercise caution and allow extra time for commutes.
Stay up to date on the University's winter weather procedures.
Review the University's extreme weather and emergency conditions policy.
Check the status of Delaware's weather-related driving restrictions.
Members of the University community are reminded to use caution while driving on or navigating campus.
