The City of Norman Park Development Division will begin work on September 4 on a Habitat Restoration project in the George M. Sutton Urban Wilderness Area, also known as Sutton Park, at 1920 12th Avenue NE. The project is expected to be completed in two days.
During this project, contractors will be using a forestry mulcher to remove brush and undergrowth - including invasive Eastern Redcedar trees and Chinese privet, an invasive shrub - but leave other trees and shrubs intact. The work will generally be taking place in a 3-acre area, west of the parking lot.
"By removing these invasive species, Parks & Recreation will be converting this area closer to what it would have looked like before human interference - more of a crosstimbers ecotype, which will better support native plants and animals," said City of Norman Forester Colin Zink.
The mulcher tool can fling woody debris when it is running, City officials said, so part of the walking trail in the park will be closed for safety from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 4 and September 5.
