SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), kicked off the 50th anniversary of the California Coastal Act, joining local and state leaders to celebrate the landmark environmental legislation with Assembly Concurrent Resolution 149.
Enacted by the California state legislature in 1976, following years of public advocacy and organizing, the California Coastal Act created a framework to protect California's coast and expand public access.
Speaking at California Ocean Day with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Addis reflected on California's progress and issued a call to action amid federal efforts to restart offshore oil drilling throughout the coast.
"From California's grassroots warriors to those who have served in the highest levels of government in both parties, ours is a legacy of protecting and promoting our Coast and Ocean-dependent communities and economies," said Addis. "Now more than ever, we must continue standing against this dangerous and gross overreach and build progress instead of trying to sell our resources to the dirtiest bidder."
Assemblymember Addis is authoring several environmental measures this legislative session with various bills moving through the legislature, including Save our Shores Act (AB 1536), Clear Labels Clear Seas Act (AB 1744), and the Coastal Monarchs Protection Act (AB 2254).
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
