September 2026

Providence Portland Medical Center recently opened two new floors in the cancer tower to expand cancer care services and meet the growing needs of the community.

Before welcoming patients, caregivers and leaders gathered for a special blessing to honor the purpose of the new space and the people it will serve.

The project adds 96 new patient beds across four units on the ninth and 10th floors of Providence Portland Medical Center's cancer tower. Originally shelled when the tower opened in 2008, the floors were designed with future growth in mind and are now being completed to meet today's demand for inpatient care.

The $76 million expansion was shaped by input from nurses, physicians, pharmacists and support teams to create modern units that support both patients and caregivers. The first patients were welcomed to the 10th floor Sept. 1, with additional units opening in 2027.

Designed around patients and families

Supported in part by community philanthropy, the new units will help Providence care for more patients while providing a healing environment designed for comfort, dignity and recovery.

During the opening ceremony, caregivers paused to recognize the planning, collaboration and dedication that brought the project to life.

Leaders shared reflections on healing, comfort and hope for future patients and families, as well as gratitude for the caregivers who will provide care in the new space.

The event concluded with a prayer led by Kelly Schmidt, chief Mission officer for Providence Portland, highlighting Providence's commitment to caring for the whole person: Body, mind and spirit.

The expansion reflects our commitment to ensuring patients have timely access to high-quality care close to home.
