SEMO Composer Stephen Casey Wins Statewide Competition for Best New Orchestral Music “The Dear King”

A senior music education major at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), has won the 2025 Missouri Composers Project (MOCOP) in the Orchestral Open Age category. Stephen Casey of Sullivan, Missouri, won the competition sponsored by the Mizzou New Music Initiative and the University of Missouri School of Music.

The MOCOP honors composers in four categories for best new choral and orchestral musical composition. The Columbia Civic Orchestra (CCO) and Choral Arts Alliance of Missouri performed "The Dear King" in a concert on April 13.

"I began my composition journey by writing arrangements of music from video games, eventually writing my first original piece, 'Danzamare', in 2021," said Casey. "I have written music in a variety of styles and for a variety of ensembles, but the goal with every one of my songs is to tell a story. I hope to encourage future students just as my teachers encouraged me."

Composers from across Missouri are invited each year to submit orchestral and choral works for potential performance, with winners and honorable mentions selected by blind judging in two age categories: open and high school. In addition to the performance and a live recording of their work, all four winners of the competition received a $500 honorarium from the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation.
