Governor Whitmer Proclaims October as Michigan Agritourism Month

Ag Director Boring Tours Spicer Orchards Farm Market and Winery to Celebrate

LANSING, MI - Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed October as Michigan Agritourism Month. The month-long celebration recognizes the economic and social benefits of agritourism to our state's farms and communities. Today, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Tim Boring visited Spicer Orchards Farm Market and Winery in Fenton to celebrate Governor Gretchen Whitmer s proclamation marking October as Agritourism Month in Michigan.

"Michigan's strong agriculture and tourism industries work hand in hand to make our state a top destination for both," said Gov. Whitmer. "Agritourism brings these two worlds together, offering locals and visitors alike incredible opportunities to enjoy everything that Pure Michigan has to offer while supporting family farms, small businesses, and rural communities. As governor, I'll keep working across the aisle and with leaders at MDARD to support our family farmers and rural communities while promoting agritourism. Together, we can support our local small businesses and grow our economy."

Agritourism is a niche form of tourism and defines the places where agriculture and tourism connect, including any time a farming operation opens its doors to the public inviting visitors to enjoy their products and services. It also offers farmers a path to diversify by offering value-added products and activities to enhance their businesses. Examples include farmers markets, on-farm markets, wineries, roadside produce stands, on-farm weddings and events, corn mazes and much more.

"Agritourism Month offers Michiganders an opportunity to experience the diversity of locally grown and made products produced in Michigan," said Boring. "Visiting an agri-tourism farm in a great way to support small businesses and Michigan s farming community all while connecting back to our agricultural roots."

Spicer Orchards Farm Market and Winery boasts a cider mill, a bakery, hayrides, a winery, and much more. The Spicer family has been growing fruit in southeastern Michigan for six generations. The present building was designed after an old Victorian carriage house that once stood on the farm. Hosting school groups and other agritourism activities is a big part of their farm business.
