Approximately 10,000 customers in Northern Nevada are currently without power due to emergency de-energization measures related to the Hawk Fire. Customers currently affected are located in areas where evacuation orders or warnings are already in place due to wildfire activity. Gas service was shut-off for about 250 customers, also for safety.
The emergency de-energization was initiated on Saturday, August 22 after the active wildfire posed a direct threat to electrical infrastructure. The action was taken as part of NV Energy's comprehensive wildfire mitigation strategy to help reduce the risk of additional wildfire ignitions and protect public safety. Yesterday, two of the facilities affected were critical high-voltage transmission lines. Because these lines serve a broad area, the de-energization resulted in regional impacts.
Areas closest to the fire will remain de-energized until NV Energy teams and fire agencies advise it is safe to restore power. It's important to note that weather conditions this afternoon may meet criteria for additional emergency de-energizations. As teams continue to closely monitor weather and fire activity, NV Energy is working closely with regional emergency personnel responding to the incident to coordinate efforts.
NV Energy will continue to closely collaborate with the fire agencies and emergency personnel responding to the incident to determine when it is safe to restore power and gas service to customers. NV Energy is aware of reports about downed power poles and lines impacted by the fire. Those facilities will need to be replaced or repaired before service can be restored, which may take longer in some areas.
Emergency de-energization is a proactive safety measure used when an active wildfire comes too close to power lines or other electric infrastructure. Temporarily shutting off power helps reduce the risk that electrical equipment could contribute to fire activity through secondary ignition.
Due to the urgent nature of these circumstances, advance notice of outages may not always be possible. NV Energy will continue to provide updates through customer notifications, NV Energy's website and social media channels as conditions evolve.
Customers are not charged for electricity during periods when service is interrupted due to emergency de-energization.
