The Cook Labor Government has provided a $1.6 million grant for not-for-profit community housing organisation, 55 Central, to revitalise its 24-bed crisis accommodation complex in Maylands.
The grant funding will go towards refurbishing residential units, upgrading communal areas - including the kitchen, loungeroom, dining rooms, art rooms, toilets and laundry facilities - and enhancing the grounds of the complex.
These works will extend the useful life of the complex, ensuring that Western Australian men facing homelessness will be supported in a revitalised and contemporary setting.
55 Central has extensive experience supporting people facing homelessness by providing accommodation and regular tailored supports.
Works are expected to commence shortly.
The grant is part of the State Government's record $6.3 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021.
Comments attributed to Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
"The refurbishment works will ensure that 55 Central can continue to provide a place to support men at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
"It's part of our record $6.3 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures, since 2021, including significant spends to ensuring existing social homes and crisis accommodation remain fit for purpose."
Comments attributed to Homelessness Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
"This grant will help ensure 55 Central can keep supporting men facing homelessness in the community.
"It's one of a number of investments we're making to upgrade and build new crisis and supported accommodation."
Comments attributed to Maylands MLA Dan Bull:
"55 Central does great work supporting people in our community and I'm pleased to see our government fund these important refurbishment works.
"This means men can be supported at this facility for longer, with refreshed units, facilities and improved grounds."
