SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2026) - The Santa Monica City Council has selected retired City Clerk Denise Anderson-Warren to return in the interim role as the city launches a national recruitment for a new permanent city clerk.
Warren retired in 2023 after serving as City Clerk for nearly eight years. She takes over the post from outgoing City Clerk Nikima Newsome, who resigned in December.
"We are very pleased that Denise has agreed to step in and serve as our Clerk in an interim capacity," Mayor Caroline Torosis said. "We are grateful for her willingness to return and support the City in this critical role."
The City Council has established an ad-hoc committee to oversee a national recruitment for a new City Clerk that will launch in the coming weeks.
Pending final approval of her contract by the City Council, Anderson-Warren will join the city effective Jan. 15, with a salary of $119.13 per hour.
