City of New Orleans Reaffirms Commitment to Home for Good Initiative, Housing Individuals Experiencing Unsheltered Homelessness

NEW ORLEANS - The City of New Orleans Office of Homelessness Services and Strategy remains steadfast in its dedication to the Home for Good New Orleans initiative, a collaborative effort to rehouse individuals experiencing homelessness. To date, the initiative has successfully connected 822 people with supportive housing, achieving more than half of its goal to house 1,500 individuals by the end of 2025.

The Home for Good New Orleans initiative prioritizes rehousing individuals from encampments and permanently closing these sites to prevent future occurrences of unsheltered homelessness. Despite delays caused by state-led sweeps in the fall, the program has made significant progress: 275 individuals have been housed from inner-core encampments, with eight encampment sites closed and rehousing completed at an additional six sites throughout downtown.

The State of Louisiana recently announced a new transitional facility, which operates independently of the City's initiative. While the City of New Orleans welcomes collaboration with the State of Louisiana, it will also maintain focus on its Home for Good New Orleans initiative with a shared commitment to addressing homelessness.

The City looks forward to leveraging state support to strengthen its approach and help create sustainable, permanent housing solutions. In 2025, the City of New Orleans will continue to focus its resources on rehousing individuals from encampments and its low-barrier shelter. To this end, the City has requested $6 million in funding from the state to bolster its efforts and help achieve the initiative's objectives.

Home for Good New Orleans represents a unified, community-wide effort to eliminate unsheltered homelessness in the city by the end of 2025. Since its inception in 2023, the initiative has implemented a strategic plan to systematically reduce street homelessness through targeted encampment closures, housing navigation for unsheltered individuals, and expedited shelter exits.

By the end of 2025, the initiative aims to transform the landscape of homelessness in New Orleans, demonstrating the power of coordinated, compassionate, and effective action. Click here to learn more about Home for Good New Orleans.
