Has Buying Axon Stock’s Dips Paid Off

Axon Enterprise (AXON) shares declined 16.6% between their September 22 close and October 19, 2026. The sharpest daily loss took place on October 16, when the stock gave up 6.4%. A rapid slide leaves some investors looking to buy and others looking to exit. Axon shares have suffered drops of this magnitude multiple times before. So what became of investors who bought Axon's earlier drops?

Most Of Axon's Past Drops Paid Off

Out of 19 earlier drops with a full year behind them, 14 left the stock trading higher twelve months later, posting a median gain of 58%. The remaining five periods generated losses, the worst of them a 28% fall in the year following April 5, 2010. Axon has recorded 23 declines of more than a fifth in roughly six weeks since 2010, and the four drops occurring since November 2025 remain too recent to evaluate.

These gains came at a cost. In the median case, the stock's lowest close in the subsequent year sat 15.2% below the price on the day of the drop, so buyers had to sit through a further fall at some point. Furthermore, it took a median of 285 days, or about nine months of waiting, for the stock to reach its best price during that year.

A dip date is the first day on which AXON was more than 20% below its price 30 trading days earlier, counted once per run of such days. Dips counted from 2010-01-01 to 2026-10-19.

How Fast Is Axon's Business Still Growing?

Axon generated $904 million in revenue for fiscal Q2 2026, marking a 35.3% increase from a year earlier. During the August 5 call, management said this was the company's 10th straight quarter of growth above 30%. Management credited products such as Dedrone, TASER 10 and Axon Body 4 for the rise in device sales, and it raised the midpoint of the fiscal 2026 revenue growth forecast to 33%, up from 31% in May.

Profit has not matched this sales pace. Over the twelve months ending June 30, 2026, Axon recorded an operating margin of 0.7%, compared with 18.5% for the S&P 500. The stock nonetheless trades at 9.6 times sales, against 3.1 times for the S&P 500. This price looks like a bet that the growth turns into profit later.

Why Is Axon's Free Cash Flow Negative?

Management says Axon is building up inventory. The company reported negative free cash flow in both fiscal Q1 and Q2 2026, resulting in a combined outflow of about $56 million. During the August 5 call, management said the company was making substantial inventory investments to support customer demand and reduce supply chain risk, and that it expects that spending to moderate after 2026. Management also cited rising component costs, especially for memory.

Axon still expects about $450 million of free cash flow for the full year. With the first half sitting below zero, all of that, and a little more, would have to come in the second half.

Axon's past drops mostly left buyers higher a year later, though these investors often sat through a further fall along the way. Buying the stock now acts as a bet that a company growing this fast can turn its sales into cash once the inventory build eases, as management expects. In the company's next report, Axon's free cash flow for fiscal Q3 2026 is the number to watch.

How To Act On AXON?

Not necessarily on Axon Enterprise alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Here is one company from Axon Enterprise's own industry that has beaten it. Over the five years to October 2026, VSE stock rose 239%, while Axon Enterprise stock rose 107%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000. See how we find the leaders.
