Huffman: Trump's Loyalist-Stacked Council Votes to Bulldoze America's History

Washington, D.C. - Today, Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) issued the following statement after the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation voted to gut Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the rule that requires the federal government to consider harm to historic and sacred places, and to hear from the people affected, before approving construction projects:

"Donald Trump packed this council with loyalists and gave them one job: tear down the safeguards that protect America's history so he and his billionaire friends can build whatever they want, wherever they want. Today they delivered.

"Right now, a developer has to stop and listen before paving over a tribal burial ground, a Revolutionary War battlefield, or the church where your grandparents were married. Trump's council wants to end that and cut tribal nations, states, counties, towns, and communities out of that conversation entirely.

"This is what Trump does. He tore up national monuments for his donors. He's spending hundreds of millions on gold ballrooms and birthday parades while Americans struggle to afford groceries and rent. Now he wants to bulldoze the places that hold our history so his cronies can get richer.

"Sacred sites and historic places belong to all of us, and they don't come back once they're gone. The council should kill this proposal before permanent damage is done. Democrats will fight this every step of the way. Trump's billionaire buddies bought their seats at the table. We're going to make sure the American people never lose theirs."
