Press releases | October 28, 2026

Fried Frank filed a pro bono amicus brief in the United States Supreme Court in Viramontes v. Cook County, Illinois on behalf of survivors of mass shootings perpetrated by assault weapons.

Drawing on firsthand accounts from survivors and those who lost loved ones, the brief highlights the scale and severity of the damage of assault weapons on individuals and communities nationwide. The statements underscore the significant loss of life and irreparable harm from assault weapons shootings and support enacting appropriate measures to limit civilian access to assault weapons.

The Fried Frank team that prepared the brief was led by partner Janice Mac Avoy and special counsel Anne S. Aufhauser and also included pro bono attorney Mindy Johnson and associates Harrison D. Polans, Morgan Fiander, Nicholas Ardito and Aysia Slade.
