Tufts University Libraries have been invited to join the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the member organization for the leading research libraries in the United States and Canada.
Membership in ARL will provide the Tufts libraries with a peer group environment for supporting critical strategic priorities to advance Tufts' research and education mission. In addition to leadership and professional development programs for library and archives staff, participation in ARL will strengthen Tufts' voice in advocating for policy to advance sustainable, equitable access to information in a challenging political and cultural environment.
"We are so proud of our libraries and their dedicated staff for being invited to join this respected professional organization," said Bárbara Brizuela, dean of School of Arts and Sciences. "This recognizes our libraries as essential partners in research, scholarship and learning."
"More importantly, Tufts will now have a place at the table to inform, shape, and influence library policies and practices in the future," said Brizuela.
"Joining ARL has been a longtime goal," said Dorothy Meaney, Tisch Library director. "The Tufts Libraries Council is grateful for the support and participation of the Office of the Provost, the deans, faculty from across our schools, and is especially grateful to the many library archives staff members who made this achievement possible."
The year-long application process involved interviews, data sharing, comprehensive reporting on the libraries, and culminated in a site visit in May 2026.
Across the university's campuses, the libraries and archives provide essential resources, information, and technology to bring the world's scholarship to Tufts-and bring Tufts' scholarship to the world.
The University Libraries include Tisch Library, the Lilly Music Library, Edwin Ginn Library and the Tufts Archival Research Center on the Medford/Somerville campus, the W. Van Alan Clark, Jr. Library at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, the Hirsh Health Sciences Library in Boston, and the Webster Family Library at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Grafton.
With more than three million titles held, along with distinctive special and archival materials and comprehensive digital collections, the Tufts University libraries help students and faculty develop and hone the skills needed to navigate the dynamic information landscape and contribute to knowledge in all its forms.
