On June 23, in Paris, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan had a meeting with Lidia Brito, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations.
During the meeting, the preparatory work for the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, to be hosted by Armenia in 2026, and the initiatives envisioned within the COP17 were touched upon. The Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring high-level engagement in the Leaders' Summit and High-Level Ministerial segment scheduled to take place within the framework of the Conference.
The Deputy Foreign Minister underscored the pivotal role of UNESCO in addressing global environmental challenges, including efforts aimed at biodiversity conservation. In this vein, views were exchanged on the prospects of ensuring the engagement of UNESCO and joint initiatives within the framework of COP17.
During the meeting, the active participation of UNESCO in the thematic events planned on the sidelines of the Conference, specifically the "Nature and Culture" Summit and the "Education Day" thematic event, was highlighted. The "Yerevan Dialogue on Mountain and Freshwater Biodiversity" initiative, scheduled during the Conference, was singled out as an important platform for collaboration.
