Mayor Walsh Announces Updates to Sankofa Park Playground

Published on August 13, 2025

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced upgrades to the Sankofa Park Playground, aimed at enhancing the recreational experience for children and families in our community. These improvements include the addition of a globe play fixture and a rubber surface to improve accessibility to the play area.

"The upgrades to Sankofa Park Playground demonstrate how we're working to create vibrant, safe, and inclusive spaces for our residents," said Mayor Walsh. "These enhancements not only provide a fun and stimulating environment for our children but also foster a sense of community and pride in our neighborhood."

As part of the project, an underutilized sandbox was replaced with a play fixture aimed at promoting sensory engagement and interactive play. This new structure encourages social interaction and sensory play, particularly benefiting children with disabilities. Additionally, the project included the installation of a rubber surface to enhance accessibility, making it easier for kids with mobility challenges to navigate the area.

Throughout the planning process, the Beauchamp Library played a pivotal role in gathering feedback from residents, ensuring the play area meets the community's needs and desires. Notably, climbing structures were highlighted as a popular request, reflecting the community's enthusiasm for active and adventurous play options.

The project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Department of Parks Recreation and Youth Programs and New York State Senator Rachel May.

"Playgrounds help children learn cooperation, coordination, and how to make friends while having fun," said Senator Rachel May. "So, I'm excited about the improvements at Sankofa Park Playground, which will provide a safe, well-maintained space for our community's kids to have fun. Thanks to Mayor Walsh and city staff who worked hard to make this happen."
