Portland, OR - Portland City Councilor Loretta Smith issued the following statement honoring the life and legacy of Senator Avel Gordly, Oregon's first Black woman state senator and a trailblazing champion for justice and community.

Councilor Smith reflected on the deep personal and historical connection between their families, noting that Gordly's influence extended far beyond policy.

"There was an authenticity and quiet power in Senator Gordly that spoke volumes," Smith said. "I am forever grateful for the wisdom she shared with me about community, leadership, and courage."

Smith emphasized that Gordly's legacy lives on through the generations of leaders she inspired.

"I stand on her shoulders," Smith said. "Her life reminds us that principled leadership and deep compassion can transform systems and open doors for those who come next."
